Mower won’t turn over? Checks first, then a straight answer.
Ride-on mowers, garden tractors and some engine-powered equipment with electric starters can go flat after winter storage. This page explains what we check and what to send.
Equipment
What may be considered.
Ride-on mowers
Petrol ride-on mowers and lawn tractors with an electric starter and a starter battery may be considered once the details are checked.
Garden tractors
Compact garden and utility tractors with an engine and electric start are treated the same way: checked individually, never assumed.
Other engine-powered equipment
Some other engine-powered equipment with an electric starter may be considered. Listing a type here is not a promise that a particular machine can be helped.
Batteries
Starter battery or tool pack?
Starter batteries
A starter battery turns the engine over. This is the kind of battery a jump-start enquiry is about, subject to checks.
Removable tool packs
Rechargeable packs that slide in and out of cordless tools or mowers are a different thing. We do not charge or repair them.
Electric mower propulsion packs
Packs that drive an electric mower or ride-on are traction batteries. We do not offer charging or repairs for them.
Before we attend
What we confirm.
Voltage and type
We do not assume every machine is 12V, or that lithium is supported. Voltage, battery type, capacity and manufacturer guidance are confirmed first.
Access and security
Sheds, locked garages, gated grounds and shared sites may need the owner or site contact to allow access. Tell us who can.
Firm, safe ground
The machine needs to be on firm, level, safe ground we can reach. Soft lawn, slopes or cramped corners may mean we cannot help there.
Winter storage and symptoms
What it can look like.
These can point towards a flat or drained battery after storage, but they can have other causes. This is not a diagnosis and we cannot promise one.
- Starter turns slowly, or clicks and nothing else
- Dash lights or hour meter dim or go out when you turn the key
- Machine has been in winter storage for weeks or months
- Battery was left connected while stored
- First start of the season, or a long gap since it last ran
- Battery went flat again soon after a previous start
- Voltage, type, capacity, manufacturer guidance and equipment suitability are confirmed before anything is agreed. We may decline.
- No universal 12V or lithium support is assumed. Confirmation comes first.
- No charging or repairs for removable tool packs or electric mower propulsion packs.
- Please never touch a battery that is damaged, leaking, swollen or hot. Keep clear and tell us.
- This page is not a DIY guide. No wiring instructions, no bypassing safety interlocks and no bump-starting.
- Symptoms can look alike. We describe possibilities and cannot promise a diagnosis from a description.
- No guaranteed start, attendance or availability. Cost is confirmed before work is agreed.
Before you enquire
What to send us.
The contact page prepares a generic WhatsApp draft with no business recipient selected. Choose a verified recipient, review the draft and send it yourself. The form does not save your details or send a message automatically, but opening WhatsApp passes the entered details in the link before you send. A draft is not a booking confirmation. Read our privacy information.
- Make, model and year, if known
- Petrol, diesel or electric
- Voltage and battery type, if already known without dismantling anything
- Symptoms, and how and when it was stored
- Postcode and access: garden, shed, gate, permissions
- A contact number
Garden machinery questions
Straight answers.
Can you jump-start my ride-on mower?
Possibly, if it has an electric starter and a starter battery and the checks work out. We confirm details first and may decline.
Is my mower 12V?
Do not assume it is. Send what you know without dismantling anything and we will confirm before any work.
My cordless mower will not run. Can you help?
Not with removable tool packs or electric propulsion packs. We do not charge or repair them.
It sat all winter. Is the battery finished?
Not necessarily, but storage can drain a battery. We cannot promise a diagnosis from a description, and a test may help assess it.
Can you tell me how to start it myself?
No. We do not give DIY wiring, interlock bypass or bump-start instructions. Check the manufacturer guidance or send an enquiry.
The battery looks swollen or is leaking.
Do not touch it or try to start the machine. Keep away from heat and get in touch so we can advise.
Tell us the machine and what it is doing.
We will say what looks possible before work is agreed.
